Real Life Inspiration: Malala Yousafzai

Malala Yousafzai is the 16-year-old Pakistani girl who survived an assassination attempt by the Taliban last October due to her efforts to promote women's education and women's rights.

Malala spent her 16th birthday demanding compulsory education for young people worldwide.

On 12th July, wearing a shawl once owned by the assassinated Pakistani leader Benazir Bhutto, she addressed the United Nations Youth Assembly.

The teen, started her speech saying she was honoured to be given the opportunity to address the UN.

"I don't know where to begin my speech. I don't know what people would be expecting me to say," she started.

But as she delved further into her address, it seemed Malala knew exactly what would resonate with her audience.

Malala spoke out about terrorism, poverty and a united front calling for education. Malala delivered a moving 18 minute speech calling for men and women to band together and rally for equality to education.

In honour of the teen's 16th birthday and her ongoing advocacy for girls' education, the UN declared July 12 Malala Day.

This young woman is a true hero and has been nominated for this year's Nobel Peace Prize, among other awards, for her activism and bravery.

An inspiring quotes from her speech is below:

"One child, one teacher, one book and one pen can change the world. Education is the only solution. Education first."
